With a character of its own and a contemporary and welcoming style, Nelle's coffee shop and wine bar was an instant success. Our user-centered design approach helped Nelle’s focus on four pivotal areas to become the people’s preferred location for good coffee and fine wine.

Do Less, But Do It Well

It's all in the details


So what does it take to create a successful coffee and wine bar?

Our research showed that we could boil things down to four pivotal parameters: Sublime service, reasonable prices, high-quality locally-sourced products, and well-designed surroundings. These parameters were implemented in the location’s interior design and in all of types of marketing, in a close collaboration with the folks at Nelle’s. That way the venue could be on brand with all of its activities and daily business operations.

The Right Tone of Voice

A local coffee shop and wine bar needs a voice on social media, and Nelle’s is no exception. From the very beginning we implemented a straightforward and honest tone of voice in its social media activities, but with a good amount of humor in it, and the payoff was immediate. More than 2000 people were loyal followers of Nelle’s before the place even opened its doors.

We knew from the very beginning that we would have to create a place that didn’t seem too new. We were going for a style that would make people relax and feel at ease. A welcoming place.

The Visual Identity

Design elements


The visual identity is an important part of Nelle’s design and interior. Our simple black and white logo was easy and natural for Nelle’s to use it in its daily marketing activities. The logo also paid respect to vintage American sign painting and diner traditions.

We wanted to reflect this sense of craftsmanship and quality in the products Nelle’s sold and the service at the location itself. In addition, we produced a range of more contemporary illustrations as posters and post cards, and they are already collectors’ items

Teaming up with Stupid has been absolutely defining for our success. I’m not sure we’d have made it without them, actually.

One Month Of Production

Everything At Once


The production plan made the Nelle’s project extra challenging. From the day they got the key to their first location and until Nelle’s opened it’s doors, there was less than a month. In that time span, we designed the identity, came up with the interior concept, build their social media presence, bought furniture… But the coffee in the end made it all worthwhile.
